GENERAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Broken Ribbon welcomes general submissions of fiction and poetry from January 15th through September 1st.

We do accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that you specify your work as such upon submission. Further, if your work is picked up elsewhere, we ask that you notify us immediately.

We’ve a small staff, so we ask that you allow at least sixty days before contacting us regarding the status of your submission.

Broken Ribbon’s annual edition goes to print by December 15th.

All submissions should include a short cover letter with the following:

  • Author contact information (name, address, email, phone)
  • Title(s) of work submitted
  • A short bio (100 words or less) written in third-person

Please do not include any personally identifying information anywhere in your submission outside of the cover letter. There is a $3 reading fee for all General Submissions. For more detailed guidelines, see below:

FICTION GUIDELINES

We seek prose that challenges conventions, stories that haunt us. We are especially interested in publishing emerging  and underrepresented voices.

Thematically, we prefer works that tackle the darker side of humanity, but we are not looking for works that solely rely on melancholy or shock value to achieve an end. If the old mantra is that literature “explores the human condition,” then we are seeking works that challenge the human condition, works that hold humanity (whatever that word means to you) up to the light to examine all its cracks and imperfections–and then invites the reader to take a look, too.

We ask that fiction submissions be less than 7,000 words in length. No identifying information should appear anywhere in your submission except the cover letter. The first page of your submission should include the title of the piece, and each page should be clearly numbered.

We do not accept physical submissions. Any mail-in submissions will be unopened, unread, and recycled. Please upload your submission via the form at the bottom of this page. Please make sure your file is .doc or .docx.

If you’ve any questions regarding your submission, please contact us.

POETRY GUIDELINES

We accept form poetry, free-verse, experimental, etc. We are especially interested in publishing emerging  and underrepresented voices.

We seek poetry leaves us salivating for the next line. Poems that hunt and hurt and reach out through the page to consume the reader. We want poems that seek grace or truth or understanding, poems that celebrate, that admonish. Show us jubilation, show us defeat and despair and rebellion.

We ask that you submit no more than four poems at a time, not to exceed eight pages. No identifying information should appear anywhere in your submission except the cover letter. Please include the title at the beginning of each poem. Pages of poems spanning multiple pages should be numbered.

We do not accept physical submissions. Any mail-in submissions will be unopened, unread, and recycled. Please upload your submission via the form at the bottom of this page. Please make sure your file is .doc or .docx.

If you’ve any questions regarding your submission, please contact us.
